A-Designs’ Mix Factory Takes Summing to a New Level
A-Designs Audio, Inc. is proud to announce the worldwide debut of its Mix Factory, a totally new concept and approach to “out-of-the-box” summing for musicians and engineers looking to get more from their current sound and workflow.
“Our new Mix Factory isn’t just any old summing unit,” says A-Designs Audio’s Peter Montessi. “It delivers analog warmth with the depth and imaging needed to make your mixes truly stand out from the crowd.”
Based on a concept developed by producer/engineer/mixer Tony Shepperd and brought to life by celebrated designer Paul Wolff, A-Designs’ new Mix Factory accommodates up to 16 audio channels, which come into the device on two D-sub inputs and sum to stereo XLR outputs. All 16 channels have a continuous FDR (gain) knob, pan pot with center detent, and cut (mute) switch that acts as a signal indicator with an audio sensitive LED, which glows when signal is passing into the channel and intensifies when the signal is stronger. That same cut button illuminates red when used as a mute, and green when signal is passing through the channel.
There are two eight-channel groups on the Mix Factory: 1-8 and 9-16. Each group has an insert for a compressor or EQ, and there is also a master insert for all 16 channels, along with three mute buttons for each Insert.
The Mix Factory has a pushbutton option to go from clean—the standard setup bypassing the transformers—to tonal using the custom-made output transformers manufactured by Cinemag. The difference between using the transformers and not is night and day, giving users an option for analog tone and/or color.
A-Designs Mix Factory / Add One
In situations where more than 16 channels are necessary, the Mix Factory is linkable, providing 64 or more channels… it’s like having a console in a rack!
“Like many other present day engineers, I used to think that everything could be done ‘in the box’,” recalls Shepperd. “However, I finally came to realize that analog and digital could, in fact, co-exist very well together, and the hybrid of the two was the special combination that took my mixes to a whole new level. It’s what ultimately prompted many other recording engineers to call me for tips and practically demand to know how I made my recordings sound so great. After several years of R&D on this product, I can say that nothing will make a mix pop quite like A-Designs’ new Mix Factory.”
A beefy, external, switchable power supply allows the unit to be used for both 120-volt domestic (US) studio environments as well as 230-volt export markets. Including the PSU, the 2U device weighs 17 pounds.

The S2V is a classic two-way nearfield monitor designed for use in small-to-medium-sized control rooms.
The 7-inch bass driver, newly created from the ground up for the S Series, covers frequencies ranging from 35 Hz to 3 kHz and delivers a powerful, distortion-free low-end with a wide dynamic range. The carefully refined S-ART tweeter, handbuilt as ever at the ADAM Audio factory in Berlin, works seamlessly in tandem with the newly developed HPS waveguide, creating absolutely precise imaging within a generously proportioned sweet spot.
The S2V’s compact dimensions belie its impressive power. A 300 W Class D amplifier drives the woofer while a 50 W Class A/B unit handles the S-ART tweeter; the combined output produces SPLs of up to 120dB per pair.
The S Series’ custom-designed DSP optimizes the loudspeaker crossovers to create linear responses for the entire range, as well as providing user equalization and in-room tuning/voicing functions. The DSP also handles the limiter-based high-frequency driver protection, processes the signals from the AES3 digital inputs, and will in time facilitate various expansion options. Software updates can be carried out with ease via the associated USB port, which also allows users to connect computers and control the speakers’ DSP functions via a software front-end.
With its highly accurate frequency response and balanced, razor-sharp imaging, the S2V allows users to pinpoint even the most subtle audio details, making it an ideal choice for use in demanding studio environments.
The S3H builds on the successes of ADAM Audio’s most popular studio monitors, the S3A and S3X-H, and, like its predecessors, sets new standards in terms of technical innovation and design.
The dual 7-inch bass drivers, each powered by separate 500 W Class D amplifiers, offer flawless reproduction of frequencies all the way down to 30 Hz. ADAM Audio’s newly developed DCH, a 4-inch hybrid dome/cone mid-range driver, is powered by a 300 W Class D amplifier and handles audio above 250 Hz and below 3 kHz, its leading-edge hybrid design offering the sonic advantages of both cone and soft-dome drivers in a single, one-piece unit. Frequencies above 3 kHz are routed to the innovative combination of the S-ART treble driver (each handmade at ADAM Audio’s Berlin factory), the new precision HPS waveguide, and a 50 W Class A/B amplifier. The result of all this innovation is a beautifully transparent three-dimensional soundscape, with an extensive sweet spot.
The S Series’ custom-designed DSP optimizes the loudspeaker crossovers to create linear responses for the entire range, as well as providing user equalization and in-room tuning/voicing functions. A unique feature of the S3H’s DSP options is a built-in factory EQ preset that emulates the response of ADAM Audio’s legendary S3A monitor.
With its massively powerful amplification and three-way design (optimally configured for use horizontally), the S3H was conceived as a midfield monitor, but can be employed equally well in more compact listening environments. As with all ADAM Audio designs, the sound is punchy but musical, with crystal-clear reproduction of the all-important mid-range.
The S3H’s wide-ranging frequency response, its power amps’ instantly available, plentiful headroom, and the lack of need for additional subwoofers should appeal to any audio professional looking for a stand-alone, full-frequency active solution for their recording studio, one which provides equally detailed audio information at any volume setting, loud or quiet. Whatever your preferred output level, the S3H’s vibrant authenticity is a spur to creativity for producers, engineers and musicians everywhere, and its sound remains remarkably unfatiguing, even when working uninterrupted for extended periods.
The S3V is a three-way studio monitor optimized for vertical use and designed primarily for midfield applications, although it may also be used in more compact listening environments.
Bass frequencies from 32 Hz to 250 Hz are handled by ADAM Audio’s entirely new 9-inch Extended Linear Excursion (ELE) LF driver, which incorporates the company’s equally groundbreaking Symmetrical Magnet Assembly (SMA) and delivers a powerful, extremely accurate low end extending right down into the sub-bass region. Mid-range and HF information is reproduced with equally analytical precision thanks to the combination of ADAM Audio’s newly developed 4-inch DCH mid-range driver and the highly refined S-ART folded-ribbon HF driver. Together with the brand-new HPS waveguide, the latter offers high-frequency reproduction with an extremely broad sweet spot with fine, highly detailed imaging and a natural-sounding sense of depth.
The S3V’s built-in amplification is generously specified, comprising Class D units for the bass and mid-range drivers (500 W and 300W RMS respectively) and a 50 W Class A/B amplifier for the S-ART tweeter.
Offering flawless reproduction of audio frequencies between 32 Hz and 50 kHz, the S3V is a standout offering for anyone demanding highly accurate imaging and localization from their reference monitors.
The S5H is a powerful main monitor custom-designed for the demanding rigours of reference listening in the world’s most expansive studios and control rooms.
The three-way S5H was conceived, as its name suggests, to be used in a horizontal orientation and features two 10-inch Extended Linear Excursion (ELE) bass drivers, newly designed by ADAM expressly for the S Series. Like the LF ELE units on all the other members of the range, the S5H’s woofers feature ADAM Audio’s proprietary Symmetrical Magnet Assembly (SMA) guaranteeing that low-frequency audio remains tightly controlled and free of distortion at all times. The all-important mid-range frequencies are handled by ADAM Audio’s new hybrid DCH. This innovative 4-inch MF driver was also newly developed by ADAM Audio exclusively for the S Series and combines the sonic advantages of cone and dome drivers in a single, one-piece unit.
Together with the S-ART treble driver — the latest iteration of ADAM Audio’s widely respected folded-ribbon tweeter, now produced to tighter tolerances than ever before — the resulting combination produces a powerful but unfatiguing sound, with a palpable sense of depth: the last word in high-resolution, natural-sounding audio reproduction.
The off-axis responses of the treble and mid drivers remain extremely accurate thanks to the addition of high- and mid-frequency waveguides milled from solid aluminum: ADAM Audio’s newly developed Mid-range and High-frequency Propagation Systems (MPS and HPS). The resultant stable, wide-ranging dispersion ensures that teams of more than one person can work in the loudspeakers’ sweet spot simultaneously, as is often necessary in larger control rooms.
No fewer than three separate amplifiers power the drivers: a 700 W Class D design for the bass drivers, a 300 W Class D for the mid range and a 100 W Class D unit for the S-ART tweeter.
With its innovative features, advanced design, generous headroom and enormous dynamic range, the S5H takes its rightful place as ADAM Audio’s flagship reference monitor: an extraordinary loudspeaker offering audio reproduction to the very highest standards of fidelity.
Designed for medium-sized and larger studio control rooms, the S5V main monitor offers all the raw power studio professionals would expect from a reference speaker of its class, but also reproduces full-bandwidth, high-resolution audio with complete accuracy and clarity.
ADAM Audio’s Extended Linear Excursion (ELE) bass drivers and Symmetrical Magnet Assembly (SMA) technology were developed especially for the S Series, and the 12-inch bass driver on the S5V benefits from both concepts, offering a quality of reproduction without equal in terms of accuracy, dynamic range and freedom from coloration. The 4-inch DCH MF driver, with its unique hybrid dome/cone construction, handles the important mid-range information with extreme precision, while ADAM Audio’s S-ART folded-ribbon tweeter, handmade in Berlin to the tightest possible tolerances, produces breathtaking highs and ensures the soundfield is presented in all of its most delicate, filigree detail.

Software updates can be carried out with ease via the associated USB port, which also allows users to connect computers and control the speakers’ DSP functions via a software front-end.
A Class D 700 W amplifier drives the S5V’s bass unit, with further Class D designs providing 300 W and 100 W to the DCH mid and S-ART treble drivers respectively.
Combining the legendary precision of ADAM Audio’s proprietary drivers with the power of the company’s amplification, the S5V is a reference monitor for truly discerning audio professionals at work in the most expansive listening environments.
The S6X and S7A Mk2 main monitors are designed for large control rooms and film studios. They use a sym- metrical concept to increase the realistic reproduction of ADAM monitors to higher sound pressure levels. ADAM has avoided the typical overloading of the bass range that can often be found in main monitors. A wide horizontal radiation characteristic and moderate vertical beaming are crucial factors to minimize the impact of ceiling and floor reflections and achieve neutral sound reproduction at high volumes.
Extended D'Appolito design
A total of seven individual speakers were arrayed so that gradual transitions could be made possible given the size of the cabinet. In addition, we chose a horizontal symmetry that can be described as an extended D’Appolito configuration. This kind of design combined with suitable transition frequencies and filter slopes results in radiation patterns that lead to very consistent reproduction characteristics in the horizontal center position. At the same time, vertical dispersion is reduced so that reflections from the ceiling, floor or mixing console are greatly reduced. Thus, so called ‘early reflections’ have less chance to interfere, which leads to significantly better stereo imaging and a more three-dimensional sound.
Impulse Coupling
Further progress in development was achieved by the use of Alucore® panels, an extra firm component material with an aluminum honeycomb core. All drivers of the S6X and S7A Mk2 are mounted on such panels, which considerably improves mechanical coupling between the drivers and the cabinet.
The S6X: accuracy and power
A number of innovative approaches in conjunction with uncompromising effort in all sonically relevant areas make the S6X one of the largest and most sophisticated active monitors currently available. The horizontal symmetry design is conscious of harmonic and generous diaphragm area proportions to achieve not only a flat frequency response, but also a consistent dynamic behavior within the entire frequency range. Complex orchestral structures can be easily analyzed and spatially arranged on the S6X. Extensive control options on the front panel allow for adjusting to different acoustic situations or personal taste.
Amplification
The built-in amplifiers are coupled to the respective drivers as directly as possible so that remote amplifier units do not compromise the advantages of active technology. One 500 Watt amplifier is assigned to each of the 12" woofers, while 250 Watt units are used the other bands of the frequency range. This main monitor combines very high accuracy exceptional power: SPL peaks far beyond 130 dB are produced without any compression or harshness. The S6X is an excellent choice for large control rooms and film or sound studios.
Control panel
In addition to the input sensitivity that can be adapted in the range of ±10 dB, there are four other level controls that affect the individual amplifier modules. Shelving filters at both ends of the frequency spectrum and three fully parametric equalizers help compensate for standing waves in the control room. The EQs can be inserted separately or grouped so their effect can be directly evaluated.
In large film score mixing rooms, there may be a need to simulate theater sound. Based on the ISO 2969 standard, the Dolby® X-Curve is used to achieve this. This filter engages a 3 dB per octave roll-off starting at 2 kHz. Below the front input jack is a selector switch that activates this filter, eliminating the need for external processing during the film mix. In addition to the rear input there is an additional switchable XLR input on the front panel, allowing work with the monitor regardless of set-up.

With these performance features, the Sub15 is easily capable of handling critical musical passages with intense and sudden bass peaks without showing signs of distortion or overheating. The downward firing bass port has been specially designed with ample dimensions and rounded edges to cancel any port noise.
In order to adjust the sound of the Sub15 to different room situations or individual taste, we have implemented several controls including one for volume (-60dB to +6dB) and one for the crossover frequency (50Hz - 150Hz). The satellite speakers can either be driven full range or high pass filtered at 85Hz. This allows the Sub15 to be easily integrated into a Dolby surround setup. Unfavorable phase relationships between the satellites and the subwoofer, particularly in the crossover frequency range, can be easily controlled with the supplied phase reverse switch.
The Sub15 is also very flexible when it comes to connectivity: There are balanced (XLR) and unbalanced (RCA) input/output connectors to be found on the rear of the subwoofer.
The Sub15 combines excellent transient response capability with an impressive low frequency performance to enable a genuinely musical reproduction experience. With a high and undistorted sound pressure output of 120dB maximum SPL at one meter, the Sub15 makes the perfect subwoofer for mid-sized and larger control rooms.
