Trinnov’s sophisticated algorithms are based not only on extremely precise acoustic measurements, but also on the ability to locate the positions of the speakers and detect early reflections. Our 3D microphone uses four microphone elements in a precise tetrahedral arrangement. Each capsule is individually calibrated at the factory (± 0.1 dB from 20 Hz to 24 kHz). The resulting microphone calibration file is stored on a USB drive in the microphone box. This file is installed in the Trinnov product being used, and all subsequent measurements are filtered through the calibration coefficients to ensure accuracy.As each speaker is measured, the resulting sound waves pass through this array of microphones and reach each one at a slightly different time. Based on this timing, we can triangulate the position of the speaker from which the sound originated. By testing each speaker in turn, we create a three-dimensional map indicating where the speakers are located relative to the microphone (which is positioned at the main listening position). We can do this with an accuracy of 2° in azimuth, 2° in elevation, and 1 cm in distance.We use this information to activate our proprietary remapping technology, which translates the theoretical rendering of the soundtrack to the specific characteristics of your room. During remapping, we use the two or three speakers closest to the intended location of a sound to create a phantom image of that sound.Among other things, remapping acts as a “universal translator” between different audio formats. This is particularly important in home theaters, since the three immersive audio formats do not all agree on where you should place your speakers.We solve this problem for you.Sound designers and mixers on major films have carefully engineered listening environments whose sole purpose is to perfect the soundtracks they are working on.In contrast, smaller studios often face significant spatial challenges and have to place the speakers however they can. In residential settings, even the most luxurious home theaters have to contend with constraints such as doors and windows, not to mention heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, and other architectural details that preclude “perfect” speaker placement.It’s a challenging situation.
