AEA Big Ribbon A440 Finally, a high performance phantom-powered Big Ribbon™ AEA is proud to announce the high performance phantom-powered Big Ribbon™ A440. Inspired by AEA’s forty years of experience with ribbon mics, particularly 44s, this mic has the greatest useable dynamic range of any ribbon microphone manufactured today. The A440 is also the quietest ribbon microphone in existence. At the low frequency end the A440 delivers bass with effortless authority. It has a flat frequency response and holds an accurate figure-eight polar pattern down to 20 Hz. The A440 has a smooth and articulate midrange, and at the high end, transients are quick and detailed without hard edges. AEA KU4 Unidirectional Ribbon Microphone Details The AEA KU4 unidirectional ribbon microphone is their newest and perhaps most unique offering. The KU4 is AEA's modern interpretation of the original RCA KU3A, which many engineers consider to be the best ribbon microphone ever made. The increased rear rejection of the supercardioid pattern reduces the amount of room sound, which is often desired in modern production applications, particularly vocal recording. With a custom transformer, strong neodymium magnets and a low-tuned RCA new-old stock ribbon, the KU4 continues AEA's legacy for wide-bandwidth, top-quality ribbon microphones handmade in Pasadena, CA. As always, Front End Audio will bring you more information as it becomes available from AEA. Link: Wes Dooley, founder of AEA, talks about Studio Mic Pre Standards in the 50's
Feature: Supercardioid polar pattern that rejects room tone and instrument bleed Detailed, extended top end with ribbon smoothness and warmth Supreme durability for close-range, outdoor, and live use Active electronics and custom transformer optimized for all preamps Front address design with built-in yoke is simple to position Integrated high-pass filter switch reduces proximity effect at close-range Matte black finish is discreet on camera Made in the U.S.A. The supercardioid KU5A breaks new ground in ribbon technology with its acutely focused directionality that rejects bleed from other instruments, room reflections, and loud ambience in the studio and on stage. Never before has a ribbon mic delivered as much clarity and breadth of sound in a package so fit for both studio and live use. As a near-field ribbon designed for close range recording, the KU5A delivers the low-end heft and pronounced midrange one expects of AEA ribbons and with moderate, manageable proximity effect. Vocalists can sing directly into the grill of the KU5A, as its interior components are the most protected of any in the AEA lineup. The KU5A is equipped with active electronics, fit for any preamp in the studio and on the road, as well as an integrated high-pass filter to roll off low end in close range recording applications. THE SUPERCARDIOID RIBBON The KU5A’s supercardioid polar pattern captures pure, direct sound while rejecting room tone from behind the mic. This feature prevents excessive monitor and audience bleed when tracking musicians live in one room or on stage. Traditional figure-of-8 ribbons, which distinctly incorporate both direct sound and room sound, rely on sharp nulls to reject unwanted bleed. The KU5A’s end-address directionality and tight supercardioid pattern allow for effortless positioning on snare, toms, and other instruments that may be difficult to access. Signal bleed captured by dynamic mics and condensers often sounds harsh and brittle due to top-end frequencies. The minimal bleed captured by the KU5A sounds more natural as a result of its smooth top end and coheres well in a mix.

Its full potential is best realized in stereo configurations, where it delivers a spacious and highly realistic stereo image. The microphone is based on the same proven design philosophy as the AEA R88, bringing together depth, clarity, and the classic warmth that defines AEA’s ribbon microphone heritage.
"Depth, detail, and bottom end for days. So much focus and tone from one phantom powered ribbon mic." - Darrell Thorp (Radiohead, Beck, Paul McCartney) More open and natural than any ribbon mic you've ever heard Designed for overheads, strings, and room mics Unobtrusive, video friendly look The same Big Ribbon™ as the R44 Phantom powered electronics for optimal performance with any preamp 100% manufactured in Pasadena, CA Modern Look, Big Ribbon Sound! Following the successful N22 model designed for singer-songwriters and project studios, the N8 sounds distinctly different despite having a similar appearance to the N22. In designing the N8, we set out to create the most open and natural sounding ribbon microphone ever made. Conceived to render acoustic spaces as faithfully as possible, the new N8 microphone excels in capturing drum overheads and rooms, strings, classical ensembles, and orchestras. As such, it is the ideal complement to the N22 microphone. But even when used up close, the N8 delivers exceptional clarity and warmth, while also taking EQ extremely well without ever being harsh.By employing a similar design philosophy as used on the popular R88 stereo ribbon microphone, the N8 achieves an astonishingly transparent sound with a superior transient response that lets AEA’s famed Big Ribbon truly shine. The aluminum ribbon in the N8 is identical to the flagship R44 model in its dimensions and tuning, putting it in direct lineage of the iconic RCA 44 type. The N8’s unobtrusive size and the “stealth” matte black finish is ideal for orchestral and TV work, where microphones need to be easy to position and more or less invisible. The N8’s phantom-powered electronics and a custom German transformer complete the package and deliver groundbreaking low level detail and optimal distortion performance, even when driving long cable lines in remote recording situations. Just like all other AEA products, the N8 is 100% manufactured in Pasadena, CA. The N8 is the second member of AEA’s NUVO series of microphones. AEA R44C Hand-crafted 44 reproduction The R44C is a museum-quality replica featuring details such as a bronze investment cast yoke rather than the original zinc yokes provided by RCA (which have a tendency to corrode over time). The iconic "streamline moderne" transformer case with "radio" finish (black with bright nickel) comes standard. The R44C is distinguished by a black and silver AEA emblem. The microphone package includes a three-meter cloth covered Accusound Silver Studio Pro cable, a zippered canvas bag, and AEA 44VC vertical case for proper shipping and storage. RCA 44 ribbon microphones have remained an essential part of studio life well after RCA stopped manufacturing them in 1955. The sound and response of the 44 B/BX were unlike anything else available, and was cherished for its smoothness, forgiving nature and unique tonal balance. As collectors began to buy up the supply of RCA44’s through the 90’s, the availability of this wonderful ribbon mic to the studio was greatly endangered. Wes Dooley, a specialist in ribbon mics of all kinds, has now restored the 44 type microphone to its rightful position in the studio. After tracking down the engineers whodesigned and built the original RCA 44, AEA acquired ribbon material, made the tooling and custom machined all the parts necessary to build the original RCA 44 B/BX design to its original specifications, just as it was in the 1930s. After years of painstaking work, AEA has again begun production of the most important ribbon mic of all time: the AEA R44C. The R84A: An Active Version AEA offers the Active R84A (formerly known as the A840), a premium version of the R84 complete with JFET electronics and the same custom transformer used in our active R44. It’s basically an R84 with a built-in preamp. The active R84A mic retains the same sonic character of the R84, but with an additional 12dB of output and a stable impedance. This gives a consistent frequency response and greater flexibility with different preamps, including those found in audio interfaces for personal computers. This is great for on-the-road musicians who might have to use a different preamp each night. The extra 12db of output is vital when recording quiet sources like vocals or soft acoustic guitars. The active circuitry also prevents noise interference on long cable runs or when operating near large lighting rigs. The R84A’s active circuitry requires standard 48-volt phantom power to operate. The premium R84A also flaunts an 18-karat, gold-plated grille. AEA A840 Main Features: Higher output than R84 for versatility Compatible with any preamp and input source Low self noise of 17.5 dB Fast, accurate transient reproduction High SPL capability of 141dB Well-controlled, native figure-8 polar pattern Wide-band response from below 20Hz to above 20kHz
The AEA R88 MK2 is a high-performance stereo ribbon microphone that captures the classic “Big Ribbon” sound in a refined and modern design. It effectively combines two matched ribbon elements within a single housing, offering a true stereo recording solution inspired by the sonic character of AEA’s renowned large-format ribbon microphones. Built on the same large ribbon geometry and acoustic principles found in models like the AEA R44C, the R88 MK2 delivers a powerful low-frequency response down to 20 Hz and a smooth, natural high end. This makes it exceptionally well-suited for capturing complex sound sources such as cymbals, strings, woodwinds, and full ensembles with clarity and depth. The microphone features two ribbon motors arranged at a precise 90-degree angle, enabling accurate stereo imaging and excellent off-axis response. It is optimized for stereo recording techniques such as Blumlein and Mid-Side (M-S), making it highly versatile for professional studio and location recording applications. Designed primarily for mid- to far-field use, the R88 MK2 is ideal for chamber music, drum overheads, stereo piano recordings, horn sections, and ensemble capture. Its passive design offers a wide dynamic range with minimal distortion, but it performs best when paired with a high-quality preamp providing at least 60 dB of clean gain and proper impedance matching. The updated MK2 version includes an improved integrated shockmount for easier positioning and reduced stand-borne vibrations. Finished in a low-reflective stealth black coating, it minimizes visual distraction in live recording environments. For close vocal applications, the use of a pop filter is recommended due to its open design, which prioritizes natural sound over wind protection.
The AEA R88A is an active stereo ribbon microphone engineered to capture sound with exceptional realism and natural tonal balance. Equipped with custom toroid transformers, it reproduces audio with an open, honest character that closely reflects the way instruments and spaces are heard in real life. Designed for demanding professional recording applications, the R88A excels at capturing the intricate details of complex sound sources such as drums, strings, piano, and acoustic ensembles. Its smooth transient response and natural frequency balance allow it to reproduce depth, texture, and spatial detail with remarkable accuracy. The microphone features active electronics with an additional 12 dB of transformer gain, providing stronger output levels than traditional passive ribbon microphones. This added gain is particularly beneficial when recording quieter sources such as vocals, acoustic guitars, and delicate instrumental performances. Its integrated active impedance buffers help maintain signal integrity across long cable runs and minimize susceptibility to electromagnetic interference, especially in environments with large lighting systems or complex stage setups. This ensures consistent performance in both studio and live recording situations. The R88A operates using standard 48V phantom power and combines the classic warmth and dimensionality of ribbon microphone technology with the convenience, output level, and reliability expected in modern professional audio environments.
The new stereo R88A active ribbon microphone with custom toroid transformers captures sound as your ears hear it with an honest, open tonality. The R88A effortlessly records the sonic intricacies of drums, strings, piano, and other instruments that produce complex transients. The extra 12dB of transformer gain is advantageous when recording quiet sources like vocals or soft acoustic guitars. The active impedance buffers help prevent noise interference on long cable runs or when operating near large lighting rigs. The R88A requires standard 48V phantom power to operate. Features: Same award-winning stereo perspective as the passive R88mk2 Phantom powered (48V) version of AEA's classic R88mk2 with 12dB more transformer gain Compatible with any preamp and input impedance Fast, accurate transient reproduction Stereo ribbon microphone that offers a natural sound Captures amazingly precise stereo imagery with a single mic Larger-than-normal ribbon elements handle high SPLs with ease Figure-8, Blumlein Configuration (90 degrees) polar pattern 141dB Max SPL
In the past few years AEA's acclaimed R84 Ribbon Microphone has become a new studio standard. Now AEA has once again expanded the sonic possibilities of ribbon mics with the R92 Ribbon Microphone. Reduced proximity bass boost and excellent wind blast protection make it suitable for close micing (6-12 inches) of guitar amps, vocals, percussion, etc. In addition, the smooth high frequency response of the R88 transducer has been further extended in the R92, making the R92 a unique voice in the world of ribbon mics. AEA has designed the R92 to have slightly different tones on the front and rear pickup lobes of the microphone. The front lobe of the R92 is the 'crisp' side, offering exceptionally clean and realistic high end detail. The rear lobe is the 'smooth' side, which has a bit of classic ribbon high end rolloff that can help to handle harsh transients in a very refined and flattering way. Just like its bigger brothers in AEA's LRG™ microphone series, the bass reproduction of the R92 is very solid and extended to the lowest audible bass frequencies. The R92 is designed with an integral elastic shock mount, featuring a unique mounting system that allows excellent flexibility of mic positioning. The mic ships with a two meter cable and a durable plastic carrying case. Matt Ashman comments about the R92: 'It was designed to have a very full range sound, and to capture it all with a minimum of resonance artifacts for the ultimate in realism. It's perfect for getting FAT guitar sounds with a present and clean high end.'
